Things I have been reading lately, IV

September 4, 2010

The food industrialists have by now persuaded millions of consumers to prefer food that is already prepared. They will grow, deliver, and cook your food for you and (just like your mother) beg you to eat it. That they do not yet offer to insert it, prechewed, into our mouth is only because they have found no profitable way to do so. We may rest assured that they would be glad to find such a way. The ideal industrial food consumer would be strapped to a table with a tube running from the food factory directly into his or her stomach.

From the wonderful mind of Wendell Berry.

Bonus trivia point: I once read that one theory of the origin of kissing is that it was a way to imitate the closeness of the mother/infant relationship. Mothers would prechew food and then transfer it to their child’s mouth – which I guess is what Berry is referring to. And, essentially, hetero men wanted in, so now we have French kissing. Or something. I mean, I have no idea if this is true, or even plausible – and it’s exactly the type of thing the radical essentialist feminist book I read it in would say – but I just thought I’d share. =)
